So you’ve just been promoted to your first position leading a team!

Congratulations, and welcome to an adventure that will test your resilience, stretch your know-how, and teach you about people in ways you never imagined!

I bet you’re excited, and probably a little nervous, too.

Gaining #credibility with your team is essential to foster trust, collaboration, and achieve collective goals.

And here’s how to do it: master these four essential leadership capacities: Confidence, Connection, Clarity, and Courage.

I call these the “Essential C’s of Leadership Credibility.” In this and my next three posts, I’ll provide valuable insights and practical first steps to help you build your credibility fast!

Let’s take a look at the first leadership capacity: #CONFIDENCE

Confidence is a quality of being that’s not about being perfect or feeling like you’re in control 100% of the time.

It IS about embracing your leadership opportunity by building these skills:

#Authenticity:

Authenticity is about “owning” who you are—truly bringing your personality, strengths, talents, and perspectives to the table.

And it’s more! It’s also about taking full responsibility for yourself—your thoughts, words, and actions—and your impact on others. Paying thoughtful attention to this earns major “cred!”

#Trusting Yourself:

Stepping fully into leadership and trusting your judgment can be scary, but that is what you are being paid to do!

While it is wise to seek guidance from SME’s, colleagues, mentors, and even your team when facing challenging decisions, in the end the responsibility is yours.

Believe you have the knowledge, skills, and intuition necessary to make the best choice.

Trusting Others:

While this may seem counter-intuitive, a confident leader recognizes they don’t have to bear the full weight of their leadership role.

Empower your team to do their part!

Delegate tasks, provide clear expectations, and offer support when needed.

Fostering autonomy and accountability in your team enables them to grow in their confidence at the same time as you!

And guess what?

Confidence as a leader doesn’t happen overnight!

You need to commit to…

Professional #Growth!

Approach your new role with humility. Stay open. Regularly assess your performance and seek feedback. Build on your strengths, try new approaches where you are not as strong, and hold the view that there is only success and learning…for you and your team!

Remember, your job is not to fake it until you make it, but to face it until you make it!

Be authentic, trust yourself, trust others, and invest in your growth: you will build a solid credibility with the respect, alignment, and collaboration you need to make the impact you want!
