Earlier in March I took a week off to enjoy a trip to warmer climes (which explains why there was no March Metaview!)
It was such a welcome reprieve from winter's persistent cold! And, so good to enter a more relaxing flow.
We hear it all the time: when you're burned out (or even if you are not at that point!) it's important to take time off. But it's not always easy to do!
I mean, really do...as in don't bring the laptop, check work emails and turn off the phone kind of "do."
The rate of burnout for the leaders, managers, and their team members who are NOT resigning is no joke. Among my clients I hear about the impact losing people is having on those who are staying and having to pick up the slack. People are taking on more, working longer and harder, having to balance even more, and getting very tired!
Given the challenges of hiring these days, for many this scenario may not end any time soon. So, one might think, "How can I possibly take much needed time off?"
But, consider this:
1. Work will always be there.
2. Your team has what it takes to step up while you are gone.
3. You'll be better for yourself and everyone around you if you take a break.
4. Your team will be more inclined to take personal time off if you do.
5. And, how about this one...you want to live a long life!
It's essential to take the long view...of your leadership responsibilities, your work environment, the impact of our increasingly VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world on your work and life, and realize it's essential to PAUSE.
So, if it's been awhile since you've really taken personal time off, what's the next step you'll take to make it happen?
Approach this as the most important investment you need to make—for yourself and the people in your life—an investment in the refreshment of your body, mind and soul,
And the refreshment of your leadership!
